James Oglethorpe

Background

James Oglethorpe was one of the founders of Georgia. His cause was prison reform because a friend of his died in a debtors’ jail. He was great for Georgia because of his militaristic skills which kept out the Spanish and because he was a good leader in general who used his own fortune to maintain the country.

Significance

  • Founder of Georgia colony.
  • Wanted imprisoned British debtors to be sent to Georgia.
