John Smith

Background

John Smith took over the dying Virginia colony in 1608. All the men there were not working and he fixed this and revived the entire colony. He also acted as a prop for the Powhatan Indians to show that they wanted to be on friendly terms with the settlers. He was succeeded as leader of Virginia by the far less friendly (to both Indians, and settlers), Lord De La Warr.

This falls under changes in American culture and identity, because, under Smith, the settlers (or to-be Americans) changed from seeing themselves as people with no hope to people who are capable of living in a new place.

Significance

  • Leader of Virginia who magically revived colony through work ethic and hard toil.
