Oliver Cromwell
Background
When King Charles I recalled Parliament in 1640 after dismissing it 11 years earlier, the members were angry and worked under Oliver Cromwell to behead him in 1649. After this, Cromwell took Charles I’s place as king for almost ten years until his son, Charles II, reclaimed the throne. Cromwell and his rebellion fit into foreign and domestic policy because he greatly changed his own land by killing the king and taking over the position himself.
Puritan, ruled England for nearly a decade in the midst of a civil war. Beheaded Charles I. Charles II took throne after.
Significance
- After English civil war, colonization returned, and with it, greater royal involvement. The Carolinas were named after Charles II.
- Therefore, Carolinas' status was Royal (under the crown).
