Virginia Company

Background

The Virginia Company was a joint-stock company of England which was chartered by King James I. Its founders went to find gold, never intendeding to actually settle and become the colony it eventually did become. They settled in the New World’s Chesapeake region.


Significance

  • Jamestown became the first permanent English colony in modern-day USA.
  • Instead of gold/silver, John Rolfe introduced a sweeter strain of tobacco.
